Chapter 14

Smoke roiled out of the room we had just been in and floated down the hallway.

Werewolves ran in from other parts of the house, shouting instructions.

I jumped up from the table and put my back against the wall away from any windows. Crouching down, I reached into my boot for the knife I liked to carry.

Not that it would do much good against airborne explosives.

The Connerys raced in from another part of the house, followed by Ulrich and Lowell.

“What was that?” Max demanded.

“Explosive,” Rafe answered shortly. “Tossed through the conference room window.”

Slowly, I stood, maintaining my defensive stance.

Ulrich began issuing commands. He sent various wolves off to patrol the perimeter and to see if they could determine who had thrown the bomb through the window of the room where Rafe and I had been working.

“Lowell,” the alpha said, turning to his son, “get the Connerys out of here. Take them to your new headquarters.”

Lowell nodded and began ushering the Connerys out.

Before they could get out the door, though, Sydney broke away and ran back to me. She threw her arms around my waist. “Thank you, Ilsa, for saving us from the bad hunters,” she whispered.

Almost involuntarily, my arms tightened around her slender body. “You are very welcome,” I said. “Now, go with your parents and your brother. Lowell will take you someplace safe.”

“To our new home,” she said, nodding.

“Yes, to your new home.” I dropped a kiss onto the top of her head and gave her a tiny shove toward her waiting family.

As they left, Ulrich turned to me. “The bomb—was that The Organization?”

“I assume so, yes.”

“How did they find you here?” he asked.

“I’m not certain. I ditched every electronic tracker I could find, and we traded cars twice.”

“Do you have any of your organization’s equipment with you?”

I closed my eyes and sighed. “Yes. Let me get my bag.”

I raced downstairs and grabbed my messenger bag to take back up with me.

I knew Ulrich was right. Anything I had gotten from The Organization was suspect, likely to be bugged.

Still, I didn’t really want to get rid of any of it. Those devices and tools kept me safe.

Without them, I would have to function with nothing but my wits and my training.

Still, if it kept The Organization from tracking me down, it might be worth it to give up everything.

Even, I realized, my firearms.

Dammit.

As I sprinted back up the stairs, a second explosion rocked the house.

This time, smoke poured from the kitchen. At the top of the stairs, I paused and pulled my shirt up over my mouth, squinting through smoke-induced tears in my eyes as I tried to spot the Hemmings.

Orange and yellow light from flames flickered in front of me, trapping me between the basement and the rest of the house.

Shit. How do I get out of here?

I paused, frozen in the face of the immense heat rolling over me like waves threatening to suck me under, to drown me in fire.

Terror raced through me like the flames
